Sutton United part company with manager Gray, days after 8-0 defeat

Following the club’s eight-goal defeat to Stockport County, Sutton United has decided to break ways with manager Matt Gray. This decision was made three days after the match. Only 14 points have been earned by Sutton from their first 21 matches in League Two, and they have not won a single league match in their previous five fixtures. This has caused them to fall to the bottom of the standings.

Gray, who was appointed in May of 2019, led Sutton to their very first promotion to the Football League in 2021. In addition, throughout the past two seasons, Gray has managed his team to finish of eighth and fourteenth place, respectively.

“Matt will forever have a large place in Sutton United’s history as the manager who took us into the Football League for the first time in our 123-year existence, and to a Wembley final and within a point of the play-offs in our first season at this level,” according to a statement from Sutton United.

“However, the results of this season have been disappointing, and our league position, as we were getting closer to the halfway point of the season, forced us to decide that a change is required, although we are very reluctant to do so.

“We would like to express our immense gratitude to Matt for the success he has brought to us during his four and a half years in charge, as well as for his unending dedication, commitment, and hard work during that time. He has done all of this with an attitude, passion, and energy that has made him extremely well-liked in every single department of the club. We will always make him feel welcome at Sutton, and we wish him the best of luck in his professional endeavors in the years to come.
